How would a vehicle change the Recipient's life? Why does the Recipient need a vehicle?
Thomas served from 2008 to 2012 in the Army. Spent a year in Afghanistan and was injured from a roadside bomb. He earned a Purple Heart & Combat Infantry Badge and suffers from PTSD and TBI.
I live with my two dogs in this urban basement apartment and am feeling well enough from my TBI /PTSD that I want to get back out into the world and get my dogs and I into nature. I also need to get to the VA appointments. Sometimes my 70 year old dad drives down from St Joe to help me places but I hate to bother him. I am ready to take my life in a new direction but don't have the means to get transportation.
Thanks for listening to my story.
Sincerely,
Michael Thomas

JUNE 15th - CARS 4 HEROES/FIRESTONE/93.9 the EAGLE
MILITARY MONDAY GIVEAWAY - COLUMBIA, MO
MILITARY MONDAY GIVEAWAY - COLUMBIA, MO
Recipient's Name: Guy Matson
Dates of Service: 5/76-11/85
Branch of Service: Navy
Special Honors: Good Conduct Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Navy Expeditionary Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, 2 letters of commendation
How would a vehicle change the Recipient's life? Why does the Recipient need a vehicle?
Mr. Matson began to struggle with housing when he was unable to work any longer in 2011. After living in his van for 3 years, he was finally able to secure housing via the HUD/VASH Program in April of 2014. He has maintained his housing since, as well as enrolled in benefits which help him to live independently.
Mr. Matson's main issue at this time is isolation, as he does not have independent transportation and the public transit system is difficult to utilize (i.e. it takes 3 buses and 2.5 hours for him to get from his home to the local VA hospital, which is only miles away). Having his own vehicle would not only increase his access to needed medical care, but would also contribute to a broadening of his social network and feeling of continued independence after relying on VA supports for so long.

HOW WOULD A VEHICLE CHANGE THE RECIPIENT'S LIFE? WHY DOES THE RECIPIENT NEED A VEHICLE?
Back In December of 2017 my husband got laid off and that resulted in losing out apartment. Currently I am working around 40 hours a week and am living with a co-worker but when our schedules conflict I have to take 3 buses to or from work to her house. Before I was there I lived on the street, at a metro bus stop. Just struggling right now to get enough money to get a car or a place to live.
I have worked for the same employer for 2 years but just can't seem to make ends meet. With a car I could cut down my travel time from 3-6 hours daily to around only 40 minutes total.
It would also help me to find a second job that I wouldn't have to be on the bus route for. I have been trying my hardest to improve my life but every time I get into a position to get a car or apartment something always comes up. I thank you for hearing my brief account of my life right now.

RECIPIENT'S NAME: Officer Thomas Wagstaff
Independence, MO Police Officer
On March 29, 2017, Officer Wagstaff went to work as an Independence, MO Police Officer. He started his day like any other but that day would change his life forever. Around 9:30 AM, Officers were dispatched to a burglary in progress. Officer Wagstaff was one of the responding officers. While on the scene, Officer Wagstaff sustained a gunshot wound to his head. He was rushed to Centerpoint Medical Center, where he underwent emergency surgery. Officer Wagstaff remained unconscious after surgery and was given almost no chance of survival from the doctors.
Almost a week after being shot, Officer Wagstaff defied all odds and opened his eyes. He was able to communicate by blinking. This began the long road to his recovery.
After spending a little over two weeks in the ICU at Centerpoint, Officer Wagstaff was transferred to Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln, NE. He spent the next two months in intensive rehabilitation and re-learning basic functions.
After Madonna, Officer Wagstaff was transferred to QLI, Inc. in Omaha, NE. He spent the next six months continuing his rehabilitation and learning to perform skills with his limitations. Officer Wagstaff was determined in his pursuit to regain as much mobility and strength as he possibly could. It was his fierce determination that allowed him to be able to enjoy activities like kayaking, bike riding, and even jet-skiing.
Finally, after more than eight months since being shot, Officer Wagstaff returned home on December 8, 2017. He received a very deserving heroes homecoming and was greeted by his family, friends, and members of the community. The show of support for Officer Wagstaff and his family has been both inspiring and overwhelming.
Officer Wagstaff’s recovery is still going strong. He is still going to physical therapy and continuing to work on his mobility. The generous donation of this vehicle will make transporting Officer Wagstaff easier, and allow his family to travel together more easily. Thank you for the generous donations that make days like this possible, and thank you for supporting heroes, like Officer Wagstaff.

Why does the Recipient need a vehicle? February of this year, my wife of 18 years left me and my 3 kids for a guy she has still never met. My truck continues to break down and she took our reliable vehicle. We are currently going through our divorce. I could really use a vehicle to take my kids to and from their sporting events, school functions, or everyday things like grocery shopping. I lost half my right forearm and hand due to a rocket propelled grenade in 2004, and have tried to make ends meet since then. I can’t afford to acquire another vehicle for the foreseeable future. Does the Recipient have any medical limitations with regards to driving a vehicle? I cannot drive a manual transmission very well Vehicle needs to accommodate: 3 - 4 people Number of children and ages 3 kids they are 17, 13 & 10 Recipient's Name: Dwayne Coleman

Why does the Recipient need a vehicle? I recently moved to Kansas to get a new start on life after my divorce thinking this was a good place to make a change. I have never been here before and didn't know anyone and I started a new job when I had my car stolen. This has caused a tremendous hardship on me trying to get from back and forth to work and to the store if I need grocery. I walk to Walmart sometimes at 8 - 9pm at night if I need something after i get home from work. I have been getting rides and using Lyft to get around. It would remove the financial burden from me if I were to get a reliable transportation and help make this transition easier. Does the Recipient have any medical limitations with regards to driving a vehicle? No Vehicle needs to accommodate: Just the Recipient. |

WHY DOES THE RECIPIENT NEED A VEHICLE? My wife and I work at a nonprofit organization and we both have use vehicles that are not really working. We just have our first child and moved to a house and we are looking to foster 2 girls until their mom find a stable housing. We do not have the financial mean to purchase a newer car. AGE AND WEIGHT.1 baby SOURCE: IF OTHER THAN 1 OF THE ABOVE Deborah Sanchez/ Chris Recipient's Name: KaiaMae Wilburn
Recipient's Address: St Joseph, MO USA 64506 1st Responder Status Current Branch of 1st Responder: Fire Dates of Service: 12/13-Present How would a vehicle change the Recipient's life? Why does the Recipient need a vehicle? I have been volunteering with the fire department since I was about 15, but wasn't able to be active in the junior program until I was 16. Since then I went through fire academy at 16, and then EMT-B at 17. I left firefighting to go to the Navy, which didn't end up lasting too long due to an injury. I came back and haven't been able to do a whole lot while recovering and going to PT. I also volunteer with a Veteran and first responder based non-profit disaster relief organization called Team Rubicon. I have been active with them since about a month after I turned 18, and have been on about 8 operations with them, including support for hurricane Harvey. I also have been working regular 9-5 jobs and such, but I do not have a vehicle of my own and have to rely on others for travel at this point. I am looking to find a new job in the fire service in Haz Mat, or whatever I can honestly get. But not having a vehicle to get me there and back limits what I can do. Soon I am not going to be able to use my friend to get back and forth, which will ultimately end with me losing my job pretty quickly. I would be able to keep afloat on savings for bills and such, but soon would be stuck financially, and most likely looking for a new home. I am coming up on 20 years old in May, which has been a problem in trying to lease a car or anything through a dealership with limited credit history and being so young. I love being able to serve my community in being a first responder and would hate to leave. Believe me, I am trying my best to work out other solutions on vehicle wise and also job wise. I appreciate yawls consideration, and am aware there are others in more need than myself, but would like to thank yawl for taking the time to read my condensed story. How would a vehicle change the Recipient's life? Why does the Recipient need a vehicle?
My dad, James "Steve" Smith, has been living on a very fixed income and has been doing his best to create a nice life for himself. He has a nice apartment but it is in a rural town and he is not within walking distance of any stores. He has to rely 100% on other people for rides to the grocery store or medical appointments. He has no family that lives in the same town and my brother and I are both an hour and so away trying to manage with young families of our own.
He has to be picked up for all family events and misses out on a lot with his children and grandchildren because the commute is too much to do constantly on our parts when we are working and raising families. Things that his grandchildren participate in, like school programs (including veterans day and grandparents day) are just a few of the things he misses out on because we are not able to drive to get him, drive him back to the school and then back to his place for an hour program at the school. These events, and many others, are things he would love to be involved in as a grandparent and his grandchildren would benefit as well. He is a single man that has been very isolated without transportation.
Unfortunately, he suffers from some depression along with the isolation because he has no consistent contact or interaction with the outside world and is completely dependent on others for transportation. It has been so hard to see him struggle and I know that his life would be so much better with his own transportation. He is responsible and of sound mind, there are just not the funds to get a vehicle.
It is very hard to always have to ask for rides everywhere, and the feelings of rejection and being a hindrance on others is damaging to a person's mental health. I wish nothing more than to see him be able to regain his independence and improve his feelings of worth and self-confidence by being able to get out in the world and contribute to his community and help himself live the best and fullest life his is capable of.

APRIL 13th - CARS 4 HEROES SHAMROCK ROOFING CAR GIVEAWAY - LENEXA, KS
YOUR NAME: Kevin Jamison
RECIPIENT'S NAME: Donald McCombs
RECIPIENT'S ADDRESS: 420 N 6th St Kansas City, Kansas USA 66101
DATES OF SERVICE: 11/81-03/82
BRANCH OF SERVICE: Army
HOW WOULD A VEHICLE CHANGE THE RECIPIENT'S LIFE? WHY DOES THE RECIPIENT
NEED A VEHICLE?
I was a social worker working with homeless Veterans when I met Don. Don served a short time in the Army. Since his service, he had suffered a brain injury and has had several surgeries on his back. Living on a fixed income was new for Don when he finally had to go on social security, and through a series of unfortunate events he found himself about to be kicked out of the hotel he was staying at. Facing the reality of sleeping on the streets, Don reached out to me. I worked for reStart, a local homeless shelter in KC that was just beginning its Veterans program. Thanks to the great staff, we were able to get Don out of a hotel and into a home in about 30 days.
Don worked with me on developing a budget and plan to recover from his homelessness. He worked harder than any Veteran that I had ever worked with. He has stayed housed, he does odd jobs for his landlord and yard work in spite of his back and other health problems. Donald also volunteered his time to help me with other Veterans that needed help, he wanted to give back because of his gratitude for the help that reStart gave to him.
Donald loves cars, he loves working on them. He saved for over a year and bought one. Finally, the car gave out and he was forced to sell it for junk. Don was the first Veteran I ever got off the streets and we became friends, and he has volunteered to help me at other jobs since. We've stayed in touch since working together. When he told me about his car, I felt compelled to reach out for him. Don does not need the vehicle for a job, or to get his family around. Don loves driving, he loves cars. A passion like this, when supported, can often be the difference in the quality of life for someone trying to change their life and find peace in their world. Don has worked hard to overcome the odds, he is a good man, and he's been an even better friend.

HOW WOULD A VEHICLE CHANGE THE RECIPIENT'S LIFE? WHY DOES THE RECIPIENT NEED A VEHICLE?
Lacie is one of the most giving people I know. I met her this year when we started working together at a school for special needs children. Not only does Lacie work during school hours, but also works for the after school and in home programs. This along with her military service record shows her exemplary humanity for mankind.
Sadly, even with those three jobs she can barely keep her head above water, financially. The expenses of living in Columbus coupled with the debt her ex-boyfriend has incurred under her name has left her in financial ruin.
When her car blew up a month ago Lacie began to depend upon friends to help out with getting to work. Sadly she still owes more on her car than it is now worth and has no means of getting a new car while paying for the UN drivable car. She feels bad about borrowing her mother’s car and is worried what if something happens to it how she would pay to fix it.
My hopes is that you will be able to provide a car for this wonderful person who spends 90% of her time helping children enrich their lives!

RANK AT DISCHARGE: E-3
DEPLOYMENTS: YEARS & LOCATION 2008 Persian Gulf tour 2010 Persian Gulf tour
BRANCH OF SERVICE: Navy/On the flight deck of The USS Eisenhower
HOW WOULD A VEHICLE CHANGE THE RECIPIENT'S LIFE? WHY DOES THE RECIPIENT NEED A VEHICLE?
On Christmas Eve I lost my reliable Jeep Cherokee to a wall on I-35. I am recently divorced and my credit prevents me from financing.
I just started a new job and have nothing saved. I just need something to help get me to and from work and to take my fiancés daughter to and from school.
Anything with 4 doors would just change our world... as of right now we are in a very rough spot being down a vehicle. My job is at stake and I have nowhere else to turn. I would never ask for help from strangers if I had any other option.... and at this point i can find no other option.
VEHICLE NEEDS TO ACCOMMODATE: 3 - 4 people
NUMBER OF CHILDREN AND AGES 1 girl who is 4 years old.
NUMBER OF CHILDREN REQUIRING A CAR SEAT OR BOOSTER. AGE AND WEIGHT.
1 girl who is 4 years old. We have a car seat for her.
